Happy 7th Anniversary, Mommy and Daddy!

Love, Isaac

Retiring

No, he’s not that old yet. But we have retired the swing, effective last weekend. In honor of the device that served as parental relief device, sleeper, and general fun-inducer for nearly 10 months, here are the last few pictures of the swing in action:

As you can see, the enjoyment factor remained high, even at this late date! Thanks Swing!

Father’s Day

Isaac had a great Father’s Day! First we participated in Skip’s Run, an event that raises money for brain tumor research at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center — we did the 1-mile “fun walk” along with lots of other families. It was a good warm-up for the 5K walk in the Prouty on July 8!

Here’s Isaac walking with Daddy on the rail trail:

And at the finish line — he even got a ribbon!

Then later on in the day we went to the town pool. Isaac didn’t really like the water — it was too cold even on such a hot day! — but we’ll try again.

(There’s also a very nice picture of Isaac over at Sadie’s blog.)

I.S. Lovecraft

The Thing In The Crib — a tale of unspeakable horror, wrenched from the unfathomable depths of the Ancient Ones.

That, and there’s a baby.

New IsaacBlog

New theme, new system, hopefully less spam.  Yay IsaacBlog!

… and Nothing But the Tooth

Finally, this morning, it was there: a sharper-than-usual protrusion from Isaac’s lower jaw.

I suppose this is the beginning of the end of the gummy smile ….

Outside

Isaac got some outside time on Sunday, since it was so nice outside! He had much more fun than Daddy did.

At long last … new pictures!

Much mucking about with various software packages, but we finally found something that’s quick and mostly easy.

So, here you go!

‘Arf a Year

OK, so, six months really kind of snuck up on us! I mean, how can it be that we’ve had you around for only six months? Seems longer, in a good way.

So for your birthday, you got to spend most of the day bumming around with Daddy, which was pretty cool. We both learned that you like the sound of burps as words, which will no doubt amuse both of us for years to come, much to Mommy’s chagrin. Or not! You also chose to accept a relentless father feeding you strained green beans, which was actually pretty astounding, given the poor reception the peas got. You continue to eat more and more cereal, and have expanded the babyfood repertoire to include sweet potatoes, apples, and yes, green beans.

You’ve also discovered something of a reverse rollover, that is, rolling from back to front by way of arching your back at rather extreme angles. This currently confuses you a bit, but you do seem to like it when it’s all over. You’re also sitting up more and more (unsupported), which means that by springtime, Daddy should be able to hike you all over the place in the baby backpack. New England mountains, here comes Isaac!

The best thing about the last month with you has been the almost daily increase in the interaction we have with you. From the giggly-attentive story sessions at bedtime, to the silly songs, to the playtime, you’re alert and happy a frankly astonishing amount of the time. Grandpa Dan and Grandma Millie noticed for sure when they were here last week!

Speaking of which, you got a fun weeklong visit with them, and got to spend 3 whole days at home! Mommy and Daddy actually caught up on a bit of sleep, too. You did manage to get a little sick this past few days, but you even managed to do that with a smile. OK, not quite, but you’ve taken it very well … fever, congestion, cough, and you’re still basically a happy little kid! I’m impressed. I mean, I’ve been impressed with you from the get-go, but still.

Of course, over the next six months, things are really going to get crazy: crawling, walking talking, eating real(ish) food … it’ll be intense, but wonderful.

Happy Birthday!

Love,

Dad

I can’t sing (Daddy can and Grandma Mary certainly can!), but I do anyway because Isaac seems to like anything I do that involves paying attention to him. (At fussy times, a guaranteed way to calm him down is waltzing, with either bears or Matilda.) A recent article in Slate about the maddening tendency of children’s music to take up residence in one’s brain gave me the idea of looking for the real lyrics of Isaac’s favorite songs, most of which are dimly remembered from summer camp and elementary school music classes.

How about U2 (and several featured guests) enumerating various body parts?

or an authoritative summary of “a popular nursery rhyme which describes the adventures of a spider as it ascends, descends and reascends the downspout of a gutter system”?

or the dreary, dirge-like tale of an insect procession. This site bears the prescient warning “It is probably not a good idea to start singing this at your child’s party or on a long car trip.”
